José Latour has been praised as “a master of the dark, gritty mystery thriller — in two languages.” The Cuban expatriate came to Canada in 2004, by way of Spain, and though he started his crime fiction career by writing in his native Spanish, he now writes in English.
In this interview from The Next Chapter, Latour talks with Shelagh Rogers about Crime of Fashion (McClelland & Stewart) his suspenseful new thriller, which is set in the world of haute couture. He also discusses his life in Cuba, where he went from being a staunch supporter of Fidel Castro’s revolution to a dissident writer labelled an “enemy of the people.”
There’s more in the podcast of The Next Chapter, including novelist Lisa Gabriele on the ties that bind The Almost Archer Sisters and Louise Penny, author of The Murder Stone, onstage at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City.
First aired Saturday March 21, 2009 on The Next Chapter. [runs 16:16]
