The story is about a young English couple from different backgrounds. The occasion is their wedding night in the early 1960s, and the setting is a small hotel on the Dorset seashore. It had a major effect on Cristina García’s family, separating relatives both geographically and emotionally.</p> <p>García was born in Havana to a Guatemalan father and Cuban mother. In 1961, when she was two years old, her family was among the first wave of people to flee Cuba after Fidel Castro came to power. They settled in New York City, where she was raised.</p> <p>With her first novel, <em>Dreaming in Cuban</em> (Ballantine Books), she became one of the most significant Cuban-American voices in the U.S. The book was critically acclaimed and was a finalist for the National Book Award.</p> <p>García’s writing often looks at the personal, political and familial complexities of living in a multicultural America. In one of her latest books, <a href="http://www.randomhouse.ca/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780307276803" target="_blank"><em>A Handbook to Luck</em></a> (Vintage), Garcia weaves together the lives of three teenagers who make their way in the world in the late 1960s. S. Naipaul, in the course of a career in publishing that spanned more than 50 years. Recently, the 91-year-old author became the oldest winner of a Costa book award for <em>Somewhere Towards the End</em> (Granta Books), a memoir described as "totally lacking in self-pity and sentimentality" in its depiction of old age. She writes candidly of settling into a life in which the small pleasures of gardening and drawing come to replace the burning passion of sex.</p> <p>Athill retired from publishing in 1993, at the age of 75, but she continues to hold sway in the literary world, thanks in part to her revealing memoir <em>Stet: An Editor’s Life</em> (2000).
