Eleanor Wachtel talks to Ian McEwan about his novel, On Chesil Beach
Listen here:
Ian McEwan has said one of his goals is to “incite a naked hunger in readers.” The British author is a master at weaving tales of psychological tension, and his ten books include Atonement, which was made into a critically acclaimed movie.
One of his most recent works is the compelling novella On Chesil Beach (Vintage). The story is about a young English couple from different backgrounds. The occasion is their wedding night in the early 1960s, and the setting is a small hotel on the Dorset seashore. The novel was selected for the 2007 Booker Prize shortlist.

José Latour has been praised as “a master of the dark, gritty mystery thriller — in two languages.” The Cuban expatriate came to Canada in 2004, by way of Spain, and though he started his crime fiction career by writing in his native Spanish, he now writes in English.
Paul Durcan is one of Ireland's foremost poets. In the words of the critics, he's "unafraid, masterful and just exactly what this world needs more of: wild abandon, wild love and sheer mad genius.”
The Between the Covers podcast continues with readings from this year’s Canada Reads winner. Lawrence Hill’s epic novel follows the life of a young slave as she faces the horrific sea voyage from Africa to America.
Fifty years after it happened, Castro’s Revolution still divides Cubans in their homeland and abroad. It had a major effect on Cristina García’s family, separating relatives both geographically and emotionally.
