Listen here:

Lost ParadiseHe has been compared to Paul Auster, Italo Calvino and Vladimir Nabokov. But Dutch novelist and travel writer Cees Nooteboom is a surprising and unique talent all on his own. In keeping with what he calls his “travelling spirit,” Nooteboom lives for part of the year in Amsterdam, part in Berlin, and spends his summers on the island of Minorca, off the coast of Spain.

The acclaimed Dutch author, who has frequently been mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Prize, has won numerous awards including the Pegasus Prize for literature. His novels in English translation include Rituals (Harcourt), In the Dutch Mountains (Houghton Mifflin), All Souls’ Day (Houghton Mifflin Company) and, most recently, Lost Paradise (Grove/Atlantic).

Eleanor Wachtel spoke to Cees Nooteboom in Berlin.
