Shelagh Rogers checks in with author Brian Francis about his Canada Reads contender, Fruit

Listen here:

FruitIn this interview from The Next Chapter, Brian Francis chats with Shelagh Rogers about having his debut novel Fruit (ECW Press) picked for Canada Reads. He discusses the inspiration for the story and how it relates to his own upbringing.

Fruit is a coming-of-age tale that’s both painful and hilarious, set in Sarnia, Ontario. It tells the story of 13-year-old Peter Paddington who is overweight, bullied by his classmates and made miserable by his eccentric family. But he really starts feeling like a misfit when he suddenly sprouts a pair of talking nipples that threaten to reveal his innermost secrets to the whole world.

There’s more in the podcast of the show: Shelagh visits Bonnie Stern’s house for good food and good conversation about Hannukkah. And historian Gerry Bowler shares some of Santa Claus’s secrets.

First aired December 20, 2008 on The Next Chapter. [runs 13:08]

Catch The Next Chapter on Saturdays at 3 p.m. EST (3:30 NT) on CBC Radio One, or listen online.
