Outdoors journalist Maria Coffey ponders the connection between extreme sports and spirituality in her latest book, Explorers of the Infinite: The Secret Spiritual Lives of Extreme Athletes and What They Reveal About Near-Death Experiences, Psychic Communications, and Touching the Beyond (Tarcher/Penguin).

Coffey and her husband, photographer Dag Goering, run Hidden Places, an adventure travel company based in Victoria, B.C. She has published 11 books, and her articles have appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian and the Globe and Mail, among other magazines and newspapers. Her book Where the Mountain Casts Its Shadow was serialized in Outdoor magazine and won the Jon Whyte Award for Mountain Literature at the Banff Mountain Book Festival in 2003.
