Survivors' tears burned in sacred fire
Many tears were shed as former students, parents and others shared their stories at the First Cree Conference on Residential Schools in Val d'Or, March 5th to 7th. The tissues used to wipe away the tears were carefully collected in baskets to be burned in a fire. Ernie Herodier from Chisasbi is not a residential school survivor but was at the conference to provide moral support. In this interview with Melissa Natachequan, he explains that the tears signify a cleansing process for past hurts and pain.
