Grand Chief explains new human rights rules
As of June 18th, First Nations people living on reserves are formally included in protections listed under the Canadian Human Rights Act. That means First Nations members can challenge their own bands under the act if they think living conditions on reserves are discriminatory, for example, if they do not have equal access to child welfare, education, and safe drinking water. Melissa Natachequan spoke with Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come to find out what this means for the Crees of Eeyou Istchee.
