James Butler was born and raised in Bay St. George, Newfoundland, which is for Mi’kmaq, unceded territory and remains part of Míkmáki . Currently, he resides in London, Ontario with his partner, Gertie Mai Muise. Although James has lived from one end of Canada to the other, Bay St. George remains his home. He completed his PhD in Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary in February 2014. His dissertation, titled Resistance and Reinscription: Revitalization of Mi’kmaq Culture in Newfoundland explores how local Mi’kmaq act to overcome the oppression and assimilation that still threatens to erase them as a people. His three adult children and two grandchildren still live in Bay St. George and are all members of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation.
