David Beers

Editor-in-Chief of The Tyee

Before becoming the founding editor at The Tyee, Beers was a senior editor at The Vancouver Sun, Mother Jones and the San Francisco Examiner. He’s won national honors for his writing and editing in Canada and the U.S.

Since its inception in November of 2003 The Tyee team has won Canada’s Excellence in Journalism Award, two North America-wide Edward R. Murrow Awards, and many other prizes.

His vision for The Tyee remains the same: establish a sustainable model for independent journalism. One that widens and deepens the democratic conversation about how to create positive change. “Rigorous, intensively researched and fairly presented journalism is essential to counter the spin powerful interests can muster when big issues are at stake. Citizens crave good journalism, and the internet makes it suddenly far easier for them to find it. But only if it gets produced,” says Beers.

Beers also co-founded The Tyee Solutions Society, a non-profit that seeks philanthropic support for journalism in the public interest, reporting projects made available to be published by other publications as well as The Tyee. He is an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and author of a memoir: Blue Sky Dream.
