To Err Is Medicine Mailbag

Preventable medical mistakes kill as many as 24,000 Canadians a year. This Monday, White Coat, Black Art aired a special one-hour edition about medical errors.  "To Err is Medicine: Minimizing and Managing Medical Errors" was recorded in front of live audience at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto last October.   A panel of experts and I talked about some of our worst medical mistakes and what we need to do to make the system safer for patients.  Hit the jump below to read a selection of your reactions to the show - including some painful stories in which you or loved ones experienced medical errors up close. Nursing Home Violence Show Mailbag

Our show this week looked at growing problem of violence at Canada's long-term care facilities:  nursing home residents who act violently against fellow residents and staff.  Violent attacks at Canada's long-term care facilities are not isolated incidents.  A study from Laval University published in 2005 found that more than one in five older residents at long-term care facilities act aggressively. The issue gained national attention after Frank Alexander died in hospital four days after allegedly being assaulted by Joe McLeod at Parkview Place personal care home in Winnipeg - where both Alexander and McLeod resided - on March 24th of this year. 

On our show this week, featured an interview with Real Cloutier, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority's point man on long-term care, the same region where fatal assault on Mr. Alexander took place.  He took me on a tour of Winnipeg nursing homes to show me what they're doing in Manitoba to protect residents and staff.  And then, we heard from you.

The Black Art of Delivering Bad News to Patients

This week, a CBC News series explores what it means to have "A Good Death" in Canada.  One of the areas they're looking at is palliative care:  treatment that focuses not on the cure...but the relief of suffering.  The moment doctors refer patients to a palliative care team may be the first that a patient realizes that death is near.  And it's one of the most difficult conversations a physician and patient can ever have.  As an ER physician, I've been through it many times myself.
