Nov 3-4 Weekend Arts Magazine

Mack Furlong sits in for Chris O’Neill-Yates this weekend. He’ll hear all about: a new Jack tale from Andy Jones to be published by Running the Goat Press, illustrated by Darka Erdelji - Jack and Mary in the Land of Thieves; the Dictionary of Newfoundland English celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The English Language Research Centre at Memorial joins the party with a symposium open to the public next weekend; Ottawa Valley step-dancing … and how “dancing from the heart” is something we can all relate to. Dr. Sherry Johnson delivers the message in a public lecture; 8, a staged reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play about California’s Proposition 8, which took away the freedom of gay and lesbian Californians to marry; and Paul Lamb will be on Liner Notes with his new cd, Get to What’s Real.

The Weekend Arts Magazine with Mack Furlong airs from 6 to 9:30 island time - 5:30 to 9:00 in parts of Labrador - on Saturday and Sunday mornings on CBC Radio 1.

WAM Oct 27-28 Ghosts of Violence

The headlines are full of examples. Violence perpetrated against women and girls is an undenaible social problem that touches so many people. Sexual abuse, murder, physical violence. A topic that will being explored on stage in the framework of a ballet on tour of the Arts and Culture Centres across the island…. Beginning tomorrow night in St. John’s. Earlier in the week I spoke to Susan Chalmers-Gauvin is the CEO of the Atlantic Ballet Theatre.

WAM Oct 27-28 Twilight Zone

The televison series Twilight Zone was a commercial and critical success in the US in the 1950’s. It’s spawned many a remake with it’s fantasy, thriller science fiction, horror appeal. Even a Steven Speilberg movie. The Twilight Zone has entrenched itself in popular culture. School Zone Productions of The Twilight Zone is attempting to capture the the flavor of the original television show with three adaptations by local writer Christopher Tobin.
