WAM July 28-29 Marthe Bernard and Deanne Foley - "Beat Down" - feature film

The accolades keep piling up for "Beat Down", Deanne Foley's first feature film. It's a comedy starring Marthe Bernard as Fran Whiteway, a young woman intent on making a career as a wrestler. And her father, played by Rob Wells, intent on stopping her. It's been on the film festival circuit and picked up some awards since it was released last year. It screened at the St. John's Women's International Film Festival last fall. For those of you wanting to see the movie, you are about to get your chance. Marthe Bernard and Deanne Foley dropped by our Weekend AM studio to share the good news.

WAM July 28-29 John Widdowson - Dictionary of Newfoundland English

Do you know what a twillick is? A giziboo? How about omaudon? None of them are a very flattering way to describe someone. Another thing they all have in common is that they are all found in the Dictionary of Newfoundland English. It's been 30 years since "The Dictionary" was published. Professors George Story, John Widdowson and W.J. Kirwin's painstakingly, over many years documented the richness of language in this place. Chris had the opportunity to speak with one of the creators of this revered tome. John Widdowson lives in England but was in the province this week.

WAM July 28-29 Lynn Horne

The "Man of a Thousand Songs" is taking time off to battle throat cancer. Ron Hynes' manager Lynn Horne says the singer-songwriter will be starting treatments of radiation and chemotherapy in mid August. She says they have cancelled all up coming performances except the one on August 11 at Mile One. Horne says Hynes is doing as well as can be expected. She says his focus in the next several months will be on treatment.
