WAM March 3-4 Taking Root Robert Hong

Newfoundland was not always the place of their dreams and hopes. The Chinese community was met with racism and hostility, not to mention the onerous and odious $300 head tax levied by the Newfoundland government. $300 at the time was equivalent to three years salary.

The NL Headtax Redress Organization celebrates these lives and these people with a new exhibit at the Centre for Newfoundland Studies in the Queen Elizabeth II library on the St. John’s campus of Memorial University, Taking Root: Chinese Immigrants and their Families in Newfoundland, 1895 to 1970’s - Work, Family and Community.

Robert Hong is one of the creators of the exhibit and I visited him and it at CNS this week and I asked Bob to tell me about Taking Root.
