WAM Feb 17 Catherine Hogan Safer - Lawrence Jackson Writer's Award
The Lawrence Jackson Writer's Award is an annual prize of $500 that also encourages and promotes original and creative thought in all genres of writing. It honours the memory of writer Lawrence Jackson. Catherine Hogan Safer won this year's award. Catherine's 2005 book, Bishop's Road, was shortlisted for the amazon.ca Books in Canada award. Her children's book, What If Your Mom Made Raisin Buns won the Marianna Dempster Memroial award and was shortlisted for the Newfoundland and Labrador Book Award. She has won Arts and Letters Awards, been published in Riddle Fence and recorded by Rattling Books. Catherine is finishing a second novel and polishing a collection of short stories with support from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. Which is how she came to the Jackson Prize - all applicants for NLAC's Project Grants are eligible and the winner is chosen by peer assessment. Catherine joined Mack Furlong this week to talk about the award and her craft.
