Rain's Back Baby... & Finally, Snow for the Mountains...Feb 10th

  • A strong Pacific frontal system is spreading mild air and lots of precip across southern BC today
  • The system started off as snow for most of Vancouver overnight but changed over to rain just before around 4 am for YVR
  • Parts of the Fraser Valley are under a freezing rain warnings with Abbotsford reporting freezing conditions for several hours
  • Meanwhile it is falling as snow above ~1000 m: snowfall warning in place for Whistler for 20-30 cm through tonight. North Shore Mountains will likely see 15-20+ cm through tonight, as will Mount Washington ans the mountain passes
  • Warmer air will continue to flush out the arctic air mass with temps already up to 3 degrees at YVR. Some higher elevations of Vancouver may see some wet snow through the day. And arctic air will remain in place for the BC interior
  • We get a bit of a short break from the rain tomorrow, after 15-20 mm of rain totals for Vancouver today. A moist SW flow will keep showers in the forecast tomorrow morning though
  • The next round of rain will start up tomorrow afternoon with another, stronger system moving in. This pattern will continue through the next week with storm after storm continuing to bring rain for Vancouver and snow for high elevations. Vancouver could be looking at upwards of 80-100 mm of rain by weeks end. I count at least 5 storms to hit west coast over the next 7 days..

Olympic Weather: Warmer Weather Ahead. Sun Back Tomorrow
  • Temps hovering around 0 degrees at the moguls event made for soft snow over top hard snow and tricky conditions
  • Temperatures will continue to climb over the next 3 days and that may lead to some minor effects to the outdoor events.
  • A small-scale system will continue bringing a few rain showers to the Olympic stage over the next 24 hours but conditions will clear out again after that. That also means a fresh coating of snow to the mountain cluster above ~1000 m
  • Meanwhile the coastal cluster will be getting down right balmy by mid-week - Highs around 12 C for the city of Sochi on Tuesday will be followed by 16 or 17 degree highs by Wednesday along with a return to sunshine
  • Normal temperatures for this time of year are around 10 C and it looks like temperatures will return closer to normal by the end of the week

At Sochi Olympics, Crowdsourced OpenStreetMap Trounces Google Maps
  • If you're looking for detailed maps of the Olympic sites around Sochi, Google maps may not be your best bet. OpenStreetMap, the crowdsourced Wikipedia of cartography, looks to have much better coverage of the Olympic sites
