Stat Update.. Stat! Oct 24th

Just wanted to share some interesting stats I've gathered after chatting about data with Environment Canada. So nice to be able to work with those guys!

So far, for Oct 2013: Vancouver has only seen 20.1 mm of rain. (monthly averages around 113 mm)

Here are the previous dry records to beat: 1987 Van saw 20.4 mm and 2002 Van saw 18.3 mm. So we may end up with 2nd driest on record. Or it may rain on Oct 31st and ruin everything.

Oct 7th was the last accumulated rain at the station so we are going on a 17 day dry-stretch. Record Oct dry stretches are:

Place  Days     Date (Start - End)
  • 1      24       1986 Oct  1 (Wednesday)            1986 Oct 24 (Friday)
  • 2      21       1987 Oct  4 (Sunday)               1987 Oct 24 (Saturday)
  • 3      19       1952 Oct  1 (Wednesday)            1952 Oct 19 (Sunday)
  • 4      15       1991 Oct  1 (Tuesday)              1991 Oct 15 (Tuesday)

Lastly, fog stretches: tough one because what criteria do you use? But EC is using fog below 1/2 km at YVR for consecutive days which is fair. We are going on Day 8 I think... so if it's foggy as forecast for the next two days, we could get into top 3.

Place  Days     Date (Start - End)
  • 1      13       1956 Nov 20 (Tuesday)              1956 Dec  2 (Sunday)
  • 2      12       1985 Dec 17 (Tuesday)              1985 Dec 28 (Saturday)
  • 2      12       1965 Jan  9 (Saturday)             1965 Jan 20 (Wednesday)
  • 3      10       1961 Jan 18 (Wednesday)            1961 Jan 27 (Friday)
  • 3      10       1956 Sep 10 (Monday)               1956 Sep 19 (Wednesday)
  • 4      9        1980 Dec 31 (Wednesday)            1981 Jan  8 (Thursday)

Whew sorry for all the numbers! Basically what I am trying to say is: man did I pick a good year to move to a city that has had quite the year for fantastic weather!
