  • Our upper level low pressure system is tracking inland now bringing bands of showers to Vancouver today and through tomorrow
  • The showers will become more steady early tomorrow morning
  • The rain will begin to taper back to showers Thursday evening where totals will be between 15-30 mm for Vancouver..the bullseye though for BC is in the southern interior where rainfall warnings remain in place for 40-60 mm through Thursday
  • Temps will also come down to a high of just 16 tomorrow for YVR.. one of the coolest days in a while and yes, just in time for the start of summer as we get into the cold side of the low.
  • Conditions will improve for the weekend but there is not a ton of sun in the forecast unfortunately..

Heavy rain drenches BC & AB..Severe storms tonight

  • Rainfall warnings in effect..Calgary included. As well as the risk for severe thunderstorms tonight for southern AB & SK
  • The same low pressure system that brought evening thunderstorms last night continues to slowly push north into Southwestern Alberta bringing heavy rain and the potential for severe thunderstorms.
  • FYI the t-storms last night did not produce any reported tornadoes but brought flash flooding just east of Bow Island with 70 mm falling in 45 min
  • This afternoon thunderstorms are possible along a trough running from near Vulcan towards Lethbridge. If storms trigger they have the potential to become severe giving large hail and heavy rain.
  • There is also a moderate risk for tornadoes (even higher risk than yesterday) along the border between AB/SK. Again, the risk area is just that: the area that the ingredients needed to produce thunderstorms will come together. The actual area that thunderstorms will occur will be highly localized. Great article on this concept here: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/uncertainty-in-weather-summer-edition/7891/
  • A thunderstorm watch is already in effect for southern AB with storms likely starting to fire up around 5 pm PT but the worst of the storms will probably happen closer to 7 pm PT
  • Tonight rainfall will intensify along the foothills with the heaviest rainfall between 50-70 mm. Total amounts of 100 mm are likely by Thursday evening. Some areas of the foothills may see up to 150 mm by the time the system begins to weaken Thursday night.

Finding All Asteroid Threats to Human Populations: NASA Announces Asteroid Grand Challenge
  • The challenge, announced yesterday, is a large-scale effort that will use multi-disciplinary collaborations and a variety of partnerships with other government agencies, international partners, industry, academia, and citizen scientists. Herbal Extract Boosts Fruit Fly Lifespan by Nearly 25 Percent
  • The herbal extract of a yellow-flowered mountain plant, Rhodiola, has long been used for stress relief and other health benefits by Scandinavians and Russians..
  • While this study on flies is not claiming that Rhodiola supplements will enable humans to live longer, but their discovery is enhancing scientific understanding of how supplements believed to promote longevity actually work in the body...but I'm still going to get some!
