Located in the west end of Toronto, York South-Weston has a predominantly working class and immigrant population. This area used to be part of the old city of York and part of the old city of North York, as well.

One topic of controversy has been the Ingram Transfer Station which is part of the city's waste disposal network and which is located within the ward. Traffic and air quality around the area have many residents worried. A further concern is a proposal by the city to expand the site.

Other areas of concern in York South-Weston are the lack of job opportunities and the need for more recreational facilities and programs for young people, adults, and seniors.

Campaign Snapshot

The incumbent in this election, Frank Di Giorgio, began his political career as a councilor in North York in 1985. In the 2000, Di Giorgio was elected councillor of the York South-Weston region, his candidate's website says.

Some of Di Giorgio's accomplishments are outlined on the website and include founding director of the Ford Performing Arts Centre and helping with the creation of the Capital Planning Committee.

He graduated from McMaster University in Mathematics and was a graduate of the University of Western Ontario Business School, the website says, adding that Di Giorgio wants to improve the quality of life for local residents.

Keith Sweeney, the youngest candidate in Ward 12, has lived in York South-Weston for over 13 years, his candidate's website says. Sweeney has expressed his concern to be active in a community he is familiar with.

Sweeney's site mentions that he is involved in For Youth Initiative Advisory Committee, Building Bridges Community Council, Black Youth Taking Action and the Humber Summit Review. He is committed to improving the quality of life for every resident in Ward 12, his website says.

A first time candidate, 34-year-old Nick Dominelli is no stranger to York South-Weston. He has lived in the area since he was a child, and is now trying to represent the community, his website says.

Dominelli is a political science graduate from York University, and has worked with the Economic Development Department over the last three years.

His candidate's website says he is committed to providing services and programs that will engage the youth of the area and he is firmly opposed to the city's proposed expansion of the Ingram Transfer Station.

Joe Renda has also worked for 27 years with Toronto District School Board and has served on the Toronto Public Library Board. Renda's website says he would like to build an indoor soccer centre in the area as part of his plan to engage the community as a whole.

He has also pledged to donate 25 per cent of his councilor's salary if elected, his website says. His online biography notes that he is a graduate of both York University and the University of Toronto.
