The drug squad scandal Updated May 25, 2004
On Jan. 7, 2004 six former members of the downtown Toronto Police drug squad were arrested and criminally charged with offences including assault, extortion, perjury and robbery. The charges followed an internal investigation, begun in August 2001 by Toronto detectives and led by Chief Superintendent John Neily of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The probe looked into repeated complaints and allegations that a core group of drug cops had beaten and robbed suspected drug dealers.
Staff Sgt. John Schertzer was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, three counts of attempt to obstruct justice, one count of perjury, one count of extortion, one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of theft over $5,000.
Const. Joseph Miched, a 25-year veteran who retired from the force in October 2003, was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, two counts of attempt to obstruct justice and two counts of perjury.
Const. Ray Pollard was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, two counts of attempt to obstruct justice and one count of perjury.
Const. Steve Correia was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, two counts of attempt to obstruct justice, two counts of perjury, one count of extortion and one count of theft over $5,000.
Const. Richard Benoit was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one count of extortion and one count of assault causing bodily harm.
Const. Ned Maodus was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, five counts of attempt to obstruct justice, five counts of perjury, one count of extortion and one count of assault causing bodily harm. Maodus was suspended with pay in March 2002 after he was arrested on other, unrelated charges.
