Rain stayed away, art-lovers got to play

Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 | 08:29 AM

The first pictures from Nuit Blanche went up on our user-generated photogallery before the event even began.

Then our flickr contributors created this massive and creative slideshow of the event.

Thanks to all who uploaded their photographs, tweeted their insights and shared tips for getting the most out of a wonderful evening.

If you have pictures to share you can upload them here.

Did you have a favourite exhibition or moment from Saturday night (or Sunday morning)?

Write in and tell us about it.

Surviving catastrophe in Zone C

Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 | 08:47 PM

Sherrill's Nuit Blanche picks are populated on this map. Installations are colour-coded by zone.

Decay, disaster, destruction and survival - these are the prevalent themes of Zone C.

Installations in this area in the western reaches of downtown Toronto are among the night's largest and most ambitious exhibitions.

Zone B - the underbelly of the financial district

Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 | 11:46 AM

Toronto's financial district, ordinarily the preserve of Blackberries and Burberry suits, will be transformed on Nuit Blanche into a collection of timely and pointed exhibitions.

Installations in Zone B, located just to the south and east of Zone A, are in the area encompassed by Queen St., Spadina Ave., the DVP and Front St.

Exploring Zone A

Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2009 | 10:32 AM

A floating metallic rabbit, blindfolded wrestlers bringing the pain in cage matches at the coach terminal, city hall illuminated by a phalanx of glittering lights - these are just a few of the sights you can expect during Nuit Blanche in Toronto's downtown north region.

The area, labeled Zone A, is bound by Queen Street on the south, Spadina Ave. on the west, Yonge St. on the east, and Bloor St.W. on the north.

In the next two days, I'll reveal my picks for can't-miss exhibitions in the two other Nuit Blanche zones (B and C). But first, let's take a look at some of the notables in Zone A.

Toronto's biggest arts night approaches!

Toronto's contemporary art 'thing' is back and nuitblog is your guide to the night when art takes over the city.

On October 3rd, as the sun sets on Toronto, Nuit Blanche will transform the city into a huge gallery of contemporary art. As the all-night annual event celebrates its fourth birthday, 500 artists will bring art to the usual and also unusual spaces across the city. It's not uncommon, for example, to see large inflatable structures floating in the Eaton Centre (as was the case last year).

There's plenty to see and plenty to do. I will guide you through each of the zones, help you map your trip, and give you my favourite picks from each of the areas. On the evening of Nuit Blanche, I'm heading out on the streets and tweeting every step of the way. Follow CBC Toronto for updates to this blog, and tag your tweets with #cbcnuit to share them with the group.

Finally, I want to hear from you! CBC.ca is the place to share your comments, your picks for not-to-miss exhibits, and all of your photos. Upload your photos to the CBC site, or join our flickr group.

Stay tuned and stay posted to the nuitblog for all things Nuit Blanche. And don't forget to follow cbctoronto on twitter to get the latest blog updates.
