Past Examples of Private Member's Bills
Private members bills have been passed by members from all political parties:
It requires all schools in Ontario to keep a records of students with severe allergies (for example: peanut butter, bee stings), and take steps to limit their exposure. It was named in memory of Sabrina Shannon, a 13-year old from Pembroke who died of an anaphylactic shock at her school. It is the first law of its kind in North America. Liberal MPP Dave Levac introduced this bill. It passed in June 2005.
This bill requires all bars to put up signs warning women that drinking alcohol while pregnant is the cause of Fetal Alcohol syndrome. Liberal MPP Ernie Parsons, whose adopted son Sandy died of a brain aneurysm a disorder linked to the syndrome, introduced this bill. It passed in June 2004.
This bill expanded the rules around what school crossing guards could do. Until it was passed, guards could only help children. Now they're allowed to help elderly or disabled adults at intersections as well. It was introduced by Liberal MPP Mike Brown, and was passed in June 2005.
This law requires all riders under the age of 18 to wear a helmet and other safety gear while on a horse. It was introduced by PC MPP Tina Mollinari and passed in June 2001.
This bill protects doctors, paramedics, and other emergency workers who voluntarily stop when they're not working to help someone hurt in an accident. It prevents the injured person from suing the person that offered help. It was introduced by PC MPP Steve Gilchrist, and passed in just one day in April 2001.
This bill was written to give It gave some peace of mind to victims of crime, as well as emergency workers. If a paramedic got splashed with someone's blood during a rescue, the bill made it legal to force the injured person to have a blood test, so the paramedic could find out if he or she was exposed to a disease. It was introduced by PC MPP Garfield Dunlop, and passed in December 2001.
This bill sets guidelines for when long-term care facilities and hospitals can use restraints on patients. It was introduced by NDP MPP Francis Lankin, and passed in June 2001.
There are also numerous private member's bills that deal with ceremonial recognition of groups or causes. June is a very busy month in Ontario: Bill 125 makes it Deaf-Blind awareness month, while Bill 120 also declares it Portuguese Heritage month (which Bill 203 helps them celebrate by declaring the 3rd week in June "Ontario Wine Week").
