CBC TORONTO SHATTERS STEREOTYPES AND BREAKS BARRIERS WITH NATIONAL HUMAN LIBRARY DAY ON JANUARY 26

CBC Toronto partners with Toronto Public Library to host Human Library Day in Toronto

January 16, 2013 - When's the last time you interacted with someone from a completely different walk of life? Or had a frank conversation with someone whose life experience is far from your own? On January 26, Torontonians are invited to engage with human "books" from various backgrounds and occupations on National Human Library Day, in partnership with CBC.

"This is a unique opportunity for everyone to get to know people they might not otherwise come into contact with on a daily basis," says Susan Marjetti, Managing Director of Toronto Region. "CBC and the Toronto Public Library are proud partners of the Human Library project which is aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse individuals who make up our many communities."

The National Human Library Day event will take place in Toronto Public Library's Reference Library Branch at 789 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON M4W 2G8.

Four people have volunteered to be a "book" and share their stories with the public. Visitors to the Toronto Human Library will be able to engage and converse with a variety of individuals, including:

•	Sabina Ali - Key member of Thorncliffe Park Women's Committee (TPWC)
•	Brandon Hay - Founder of Black Daddies Club (BDC)
•	Gabrielle Scrimshaw - President and Co-founder of Aboriginal Professional Association of Canada (APAC)
•	Ing Wong-Ward - CBC Toronto's Producer for "Here and Now Toronto"

National Human Library Day is a one-day event (with Winnipeg hosting a three-day event) hosted by local libraries and media and cultural centres across the country, in an effort to help dispel myths and stereotypes by creating an opportunity for one-on-one conversations between people who may never have met otherwise. People from various walks of life, including CBC personalities, will volunteer their time as "books." Members of the public will have a chance to "check out" a "book" and ask questions to learn about the person and their extraordinary life.

Complementing the events online, cbc.ca/humanlibrary features registration information, allows Canadians to check out the Human Library's interactive map, and sample feature "books" from across the country. A live digital event on National Human Library Day will extend the conversation. Canadians are also encouraged to engage in conversations on Twitter by using the hashtag #CBCHumanLibrary.

The Human Library was created by a group of young people in Copenhagen to fight against prejudice. They organized the first Human Library at a festival in 2000. Since then, there have been Human Libraries in 27 countries. CBC is the first broadcaster to be involved as a national media partner.

About CBC/Radio-Canada

CBC/Radio-Canada is Canada's national public broadcaster and one of its largest cultural institutions. The Corporation is a leader in reaching Canadians on new platforms and delivers a comprehensive range of radio, television, Internet, and satellite-based services. Deeply rooted in the regions, CBC/Radio-Canada is the only domestic broadcaster to offer diverse regional and cultural perspectives in English, French and eight Aboriginal languages, plus five languages for international audiences. In 2011, CBC/Radio-Canada celebrated 75 years of serving Canadians and being at the centre of the democratic, social and cultural life of Canada.

ABOUT CEASE FIRE: RECLAIMING OUR COMMUNITIES

April 24, 2012 - CBC Toronto is pleased to announce Joan Chang as traffic reporter for CBC Radio One's Metro Morning and Here and Now, effective May 1, 2012.

Joan Chang has a seven year history with CBC; she has worked as a host, producer, and reporter for CBC Radio One programs in Vancouver, including The Main Ingredient, The Story From Here, The Early Edition, B.C. Almanac and On The Coast. For the past two years, Joan has worked behind the scenes as a producer for both Metro Morning and Here and Now.

"We are very pleased that Joan will join our on-air team in the integral job as the traffic reporter for Toronto", says Joan Melanson, Executive Director, Current Affairs for CBC Toronto. "She was born and raised in Scarborough. She knows Toronto well - both as a driver, and as a public transit user."

Joan will take over traffic reporting duties from veteran broadcaster Jim Curran, who had held the position for the past 40 years "I'm honoured to be chosen to fill Jim's seat in the studio during the morning and afternoon drives" Joan says. I know commuting can be a stressful and exhausting experience in this city. I'd like to keep people informed in order to make that trip as easy and comfortable as I can. I'm really looking forward to starting in this new role."

Joan Melanson adds, "In this position, Joan will build on her experience as a traffic reporter in Vancouver. She's also a strong journalist and that experience is added value when it comes to giving our audience crucial survival information."

Metro Morning's Matt Galloway spoke with Joan. Listen to the interview here.

You'd never believe it when you hear her warm, cheerful voice very early in the morning, but it takes four - count 'em, four! - alarm clocks to get night owl Jill Dempsey up and rolling in time for her job as newsreader on Metro Morning.

Even so, she's worked on the show - with a few breaks - since 1991.

Jill got her start at Toronto's City-TV, working behind the scenes as a writer and producer. She came to CBC in June 1989, anchoring Calgary's late night news. After two months she was tapped as a backup host for Newsworld, a relationship she maintained for six years after she returned to Toronto. More...
