At Your Service

An estimated 10 to 15,000 people form the backbone of Thunder Bay through service jobs, yet their voices are seldom heard. The CBC's Nicole Ireland examines life for the employees you meet every day in restaurants and stores, and are At Your Service.

Above, billboards (in red) advertising customer service jobs have popped up all over Thunder Bay. One of the most noticeable shifts in the city's retail landscape is the closure of three Zellers stores. Two locations are already closed (in blue) and will re-open as Wal-Mart stores in Fall 2012. The last Zellers store at Intercity Mall (in yellow) will close in early 2013 and become a Target store. Click on a drop pin for more information.

At Your Service

How do we treat our service workers?

Employees in Thunder Bay's restaurants and stores spend their days dealing with customers. They are expected to be courteous and helpful. But how do customers treat service workers in return? Meet restaurant server Meghan Eddy and veteran Zellers employee Shannon Hodgkinson as they share their experiences.

Listen:

Meghan Eddy offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of life as a restaurant server in Thunder Bay through a blog she started a few years ago as a writing project at Lakehead University. The blog, coincidentally, is also called 'At Your Service' (no relation to the CBC series). Eddy has been waitressing for the last five years to put herself through school.
