42 year-old Dan Shapiro commutes 55km by bicycle everyday on Canada's busiest highway, Ontario's route 401. He began riding on the 401 when he and his wife were no longer able to afford two cars. Although this method of commuting is illegal, Shapiro claims that the sixteen lane freeway is his best route to work.
Shapiro confesses he would prefer to be cycling on a bike lane, but
argues the road is there for a reason: "It was built to provide people
with an efficient way to get to work, if I decide to drive a car, ride a
bike or even rollerblade on the 401 that's my choice!"
often cuts down on his travel time by simply holding onto the bumper of a
large truck while pulling him along at 110km per hour.
Oldring recently accompanied Dan on one of his extreme morning commutes;
an experience that can best described as harrowing.Related: Montreal bylaw requires dogs understand commands in both official languagesBest of This Is That: Pay per use parks, Banff cougars, casual Friday police, and 401 bicycle commuteSaskatoon Police Participate in Casual FridayToronto Neighborhood Tries to Ban Children
