Ben Heppner grew up in Dawson Creek, in the interior of British Columbia, next to the border with Alberta. As the youngest child in a Mennonite family, he was surrounded by siblings and parents who sang. He studied at the University of Toronto Opera School and became a member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble in the early 1980's.

From there, his career took off. Ben Heppner is now one of the finest dramatic tenors performing anywhere in the world. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including being made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Now, he's taking on a new role. Starting this fall, Ben Heppner will be the new host of Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, on CBC Radio 2.

Last January, Michael Enright spoke to Mr. Heppner when he was in Toronto to sing the role of "Tristan", in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde

They talked about the vocal strains of grand opera, about hectic travel schedules and about motorcycles, which he loves.
