If we have anyone to thank for inspiring the career of Stuart Hamilton, the brilliant Canadian vocal coach and accompanist, it is Shirley Temple.
Sitting in the darkness at the Capitol Theatre in Regina, aged 5, Stuart
Hamilton was bewitched by the little Ms. Temple in the movie, Bright Eyes.
But she was just the first in a long, long, line of women who would
influence ... and be influenced by ... Stuart Hamilton: Canadian superstar sopranos
like Maureen Forrester, Elizabeth Benson Guy, Isabel Bayrakdarian and Lois Marshall.
His career as a vocal coach spans 60-plus years. As a accompanist
and solo performer, he has played many of the world's great concert
halls ... Toronto's Massey Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, and London's
He was the founder and artistic director of Opera in Concert and was the
first artistic director of the Canadian Opera Company ensemble. He
still gives master classes in vocal interpretation, and has taught all
over North America.
He has just published a memoir called Opening Windows.
