Featured Documentary: Survivor

Thumbnail image for Truxton.jpgIn February, 1942, a severe winter storm hit the south coast of Newfoundland; a storm which wrecked the U.S. warship Truxton, with the loss of 110 lives.

When the Truxton went down in that storm, forty-six men survived. All of them were white; except one. Lanier Phillips was from Georgia, where in 1942, racial discrimination was very much a fact of life.

Mr. Phillips died earlier this week at the age of 88. This morning: the story of Lanier Phillips, and how a shipwreck changed his life.

Our documentary, Survivor, was produced by Chris Brookes, and was first aired on The Sunday Edition in February, 2001.
