Wotan is the ruler of the Gods and is married to Fricka, the goddess of the home. He asks the two giants, Fasolt and Fafner to build a palace for the gods and in exchange, he will give them Freia who ensures the gods’ immortality. Alas, this was a bargain that he never intended to keep. He asks Loge, the god of fire to come up with an alternative. When the giants come to collect their fee, Loge tells them of the Ring and of Alberich, who has it in his procession. Fasolt and Fafner are intrigued and so are the other gods including Wotan himself. This begins the chain of events where the Ring is acquired by many characters and eventually leads to the destruction of Valhalla and the end of the rule of the gods.
