The Rhinemaidens (Woglinde, Wellgunde,
and Flosshilde) are water nymphs and
guardians of the Rheingold, a cache of
gold kept in the Rhine River. After they
spurn Alberich’s amorous advances, he
steals the gold from them and orders his
brother Mime to forge it into a ring
of power.
