Erda is the goddess of earth
and also the mother of the
nine Valkyries and the three
Norns. She warns Wotan to
give up the ring after he takes it
from Alberich. Like her daughters,
theNorns, Erda has the ability to see
the future and possesses great wisdom.
Several times during the operas, Wotan
seeks advice from Erda.
