Mark's Animation Tips!

Mark- the creator of the fabulous Hero Guitarist videos lends us his tips for creating an Outlet-worthy animation!
  1. Make every movement you want in your cartoon in Microsoft Paint.
  2. Download Windows Movie Maker if you want to put a title at the beginning and cool clip transitions and video effects.
  3. The sound recording is done on Windows Movie Maker, and you have to click on Narrate and make sure you have a mic. (obviously)
  4. It does take awhile to do the cartoons. Like the last one I did is only like a minue long and it took me an hour and a half.
And that’s how Mark makes cartoons! Have you got some how to tips for the Outlet Community? If so, email them in to: theoutlet@cbc.ca

Write a Script

When you're making a video for the Outlet, you can wing it and film as you go, or if you want to have some fun writing a script here are some tips!

  • Procrastination is a huge part of writing a script! Once you've shaken the sillies out you can now sit down and become a studious writer.
  • Write down how your story is going to begin, what's going to happen in the middle and how it's going to end.
  • Think of something that you want to say with your script a universal message like "life is beautiful" or "people are weird" and use that as a starting off point for your story.
  • Make your characters interesting! Maybe you have an "All Canadian Girl" living next door, or maybe your story features the "Anti-Gravity Superhero!"
  • Make something about your characters be likeable to everyone. That doesn't mean that the characters have to be nice... lots of people like mean characters too!
  • When you're done your script, make sure you have somebody else read it. See if they can make any suggestions that would make your script better. You don't have to take all their suggestions if you don't want to, but often an editor can see things that can help your script!
  • Come up with a brilliant title, and don't forget to thank us in your Oscar speech!
