Literary Smackdown #11: To tweet or not to tweet

Listen

The Next Chapter and Canada Writes join forces once again to present the Literary Smackdown, our ongoing series where writers playfully joust on an issue related to the writing life. In this round, Brian Francis and C.S. Richardson square off over a question of self promotion: to tweet or not to tweet.

Brian Francis is the author of the novels Natural Order and Fruit, he writes the recipe blog Caker Cooking, and he is also an avid and creative tweeter.  Brian acknowledges that you can only do so much with 140 characters, but he argues that Twitter is a great space for authors to connect with their readers, especially at this moment when many independent book stores are struggling and closing.

C.S. Richardson says social media isn't everyone's cup of tea and he's not convinced that it helps writers to expand their readership.  He believes that the focus should be on the work, not the author, and he prefers to connect with readers in person at literary festivals... like the ones he will be visiting soon as he promotes latest novel The Emperor of Paris.

Is Twitter a great opportunity for writers in the 21st century or is it basically just a platform for shameless self-promotion?  Should a writer tweet or not?  Click "Listen" to hear Brian and C.S. duke it out.  You can also read their Literary Smackdown essays on the Canada Reads website.
