GLOSSARY

Confused? Who wouldn't be. Here's a dictionary of the new hi-tech lingo.

BITTORENT: A way to share large files between computer users. Often used illegally to swap TV and movies.

BLOG OR WEBLOG: A website used as an online journal.

DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCAST OR HI-DEFINITION RADIO: A technology for broadcasting audio programming in digital form. It delivers CD quality sound and it also gives radio station the opportunity to stream information back and forth.

DOOCED: To lose your job as a result of something you wrote on a blog.

INTERNET RADIO: A broadcasting service transmitted via the internet. Not every internet "radio station" has a corresponding traditional radio station. Most of them broadcast only on the internet and differ from traditional radio in that they have larger playlists and cater to niche audiences. They are also available around the world and can reach a larger audience. Most are paid for through listener donations.

MP3 PLAYER: A mobile electronic device that stores, organizes and plays digital audio files, most often mp3 files.  An iPod is the most popular of the MP3 players available on the market. Newer generation players now also play video files.

MYSPACE: A social networking site that now has over 70 million members and gets 1.5 billion page views per day. Members use it to share information, photos and music.

NAPSTER: Once a file sharing service used by millions to download music and audio files from the internet illegally. Now Napster is a music subscription service where you pay to listen to music legally.

PODCASTING: A way to download and listen to audio/video programming on a computer or mobile device such an an MP3 player. You can subscribe to a podcast and new programs automatically download to your computer.

RSS: Really Simple Syndication, a way of subscribing to podcasts and other forms of content on the internet.

SATELLITE RADIO: Digital quality radio available via satellite. XM and Sirius Satellite Radio project 15 million subscribers in North America by 2007. Listeners have to pay for the hardware and a monthly subscription fee.

SLINGBOX: An internet TV streaming device that lets consumers watch their cable, satellite or PVR on their computer

TERRESTRIAL RADIO: Good old-fashioned radio that you tune into.

VIDEO BLOG/VIDEO PODCAST: An online show to view or download on a computer, iPod or cellular phone.

WIKIPEDIA: Free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It's the largest reference website on the internet, the content is free and is written collaboratively.
