The Debaters

Hosted by Steve Patterson

Saturdays at 1:00pm (1:30 NT), and Wednesdays at 11:30am (12:00 NT) on CBC Radio One

What's Coming Up:

Sat Nov 14 Robots & Surnames

This week we are debating last names as patriarchal pontificator Sean Lecomber tries to coerce Vancouver funny Lady Erica Sigurdson into admitting that when it comes to mom, dad and the kids, there should only be one surname -- the sir’s! Also on our double bill of facts and funny, Atomic Improv’s Mark Meer and Donovan Wurkun make like Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Rhetorical Robots as they debate the merits of intelligent machines and whether we should fear their rise. Your radio may not be an intelligent machine but it will certainly seem smarter if it is tuned to The Debaters Saturday at 1:00 PM

Wed Nov 11 - Canada's N Word & Pirates

Is it time to ban the “N” word? The Debaters are in Newfoundland this week as local celebs Shaun Majumder and Snook (Pete Soucy) go toe to toe to decide whether the term Newfie is an amiable appellation or malignant moniker. Next up, we’re talking pirates as stand-up comics John Ki and Darren Frost rattle sabers and cross swords over whether the modern day variety should to be wiped off the map. Hey, Canada, can we interest you in a treasure trove of fact and funny? Just tune in to The Debaters, Wednesday at 11:30 am. You won’t believe your “buccaneers.”

Sat Nov 7 - Karaoke & Air Canada

This week we are debating the merits of karaoke as Asian comedian Paul Bae [bay] tries to prove to Edmonton's Neil Grahn [rhymes with yawn] that he is both out of tune and out of touch if he thinks that this sing-along pastime hits any right notes. Also on Saturday's show we're talking air travel as "plane" speaking funny man Al Rae tries to convince comic Graham Clark that with Westjet flying high it wouldn't hurt Canadians if we grounded Air Canada for good. As always The Debaters is your one way ticket to hilarity. Be sure to be at the Radio One departure gate Saturday at 1:00 pm.

The Barbie doll is 50 years old but has this curvaceous toy been good for girls? This week, funny gal Debra DiGiovanni dresses up her argument in a stylish mix of facts and funny as she tries to convince Elvira Kurt that Barbie, though made of plastic, is fantastic. Next up on our double bill of oratorical delights, well-aged musical comedy duo The Williamson Playboys (Paul Bates and Doug Morency) are out to prove to cheesy young rapper White Cheddah (Sam Easton) that today’s youth should show a little more respect. Take a cue from self-respecting comedy fans across the country and tune in to The Debaters Wednesday at 11:30 am on CBC Radio One.

Sat Oct 31 Halloween & Aliens

It's time again for scary characters and devilish pranks – no not the House of Commons – it's Halloween. But is this so-called holiday just an excuse for bad nutrition and even worse behaviour? This week, West Coast comedienne Erica Sigurdson tries to convince Jon Dore (The Jon Dore Television Show) that Halloween should be banned. Next up, conspiracy theorist J.P. Mass has the frightening task of convincing pragmatic funnyman Irwin Barker that aliens have walked among us. The truth is out there... and it's hilarious. The Debaters airs Saturday at 1:00 pm on Radio One.

Is H1N1 really worth all this hysteria? American funnyman Alonzo Bodden (winner of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”) does his best to prove to Montreal immunology major Scott Faulconbridge that swine flu is nothing but hog wash. Next up on our highly contagious mix of fact and funny, Canadian comedy star Debra DiGiovanni tries to convince incredulous New Yorker Judy Gold that you haven’t made it ‘till you’ve made it in the USA. Yes, we’ve got Americans versus Canadians this week on The Debaters. Tell your friends on both sides of the border to tune in and help our infectious brand of comedy “go viral.” Airs Wednesday at 11:30 am on CBC Radio One.

Sat Oct 24 Wisdom of our Edlers

We're in St. Albert this week as Alberta booster Peter Brown does battle with Toronto tar sands terminator Alan Park to prove that as long as there are pick-ups, ponies and petroleum it ain't over for Alberta. Next up on our comedy double bill, from way out West, aboriginal comic Dawn Dumont tires to convince middle-aged white guy, Andrew Grose that advanced wisdom does not necessarily come with advanced age. Now in its fourth season, The Debaters is wise-cracking beyond its years. Tune in and catch all the sage quips from our seasoned comedians Saturday at 1:00 PM on Radio One.

Oct 21Comic Book Heroes

Blockbusters like “The Dark Knight” and “Watchmen” continue to produce major revenue for movie studios, but are the flawed heroes of these popular films really deserving of our adoration? This week, comic book super-fans Ian Boothby and David Pryde engage in an epic battler over whether comic book superheroes make good role models. Next up on our double bill of laughs and logic, comic Greg Morton uses many a funny voice to prove to Ron Sparks that “Star Wars” is better than “Lord of the Rings.” Once again “The Debaters” brings you epic battles of fact and funny. Wednesday at 11:30 on CBC Radio One.
