The west African island of Bioko is home to six unique species of monkey. But it's also a place where monkey meat is considered a delicacy and the primate population is under threat. In this documentary, freelance journalist Lindsay Mackenzie tracks Bioko's battle between conservation and consumption.
Biologists call it the Galapagos of the Gulf of Guinea. Even though the west African island of Bioko is only half the size of Prince Edward Island, it's believed to be the most important place for primate conservation in Africa.
Six species of monkey live there -- and nowhere else. All are endangered. The island profits from vast reserves of offshore oil. Petro-dollars fund its rapid development, but also threaten the monkeys with the demand they create for monkey meat.
In this documentary, freelance journalist Lindsay Mackenzie visits the island of Bioko to explore the ongoing battle between conservation and consumption.
