To Have & To Hold: Evelyn Amony's Story
One of the most viral of last year's viral videos was Kony 2012, the story of the Ugandan warlord believed to be responsible for the deaths of thousands of people and for kidnapping children to serve in his personal army.
The film energized the search to track him down -- but today, he and his Lord's Resistance Army remain elusive. While his whereabouts are unknown, some details have emerged of his private habits, his brutality and his bizarre behaviours. That's because people close to him escaped his grasp.
Today we bring you the troubling story of a woman who knows him well... as a victim -- and as his so-called wife.
*** Just a warning ... some of the details of Evelyn Amony's story are disturbing. And to protect her children... we have changed their names. ***
And a note... Evelyn calls Joseph Kony - Joseph "Coin" ... a common pronunciation in Northern Uganda - where he is from.
Vancouver journalist, Jodie Martinson's documentary is called To Have and To Hold. It originally aired on January 7, 2013.
In March, the International Criminal Court convicted Joseph Kony in absentia of murder, deportation and forcible transfer, enslavement, torture, and rape. He was sentenced to life in prison. The United States has offered a $5 million reward for his capture.
Short film: Stronghearted
Jodie Martinson also directed a short animated film for the National Film Board depicting a scene from Evelyn's life.
