Living Under Rockets: Israel & Gaza Conflict - CBC's Margaret Evans

"So in the days ahead, the United States will work with our partners here in Israel and across the region toward an outcome that bolsters security for the people of Israel, improves conditions for the people of Gaza and moves towards a comprehensive peace for all people of the region."

Hilary Clinton may sound reasonable as she tries to offer a way out of the misery that's wrecked parts of the Gaza Strip and Israel this month. The US Secretary of State is in the Middle East, yesterday meeting in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Today she's meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in Cairo.

But while promises of security are easy to make, actually stopping the attacks remains elusive. Israel has intensified its assault on Gaza, dropping bombs from the sky and firing on the Palestinian territory from the sea.

More than 130 Palestinian--most civilians--have been killed during the past week. Hundreds more injured. And life in Israel is dangerous as well, with militant rockets raining down on homes and cities with little warning. 5 Israelis, 4 of them civilians have been killed. And this morning a bomb went off on a bus in Tel Aviv, wounding 10 people.

Amid all this violence, the push for a ceasefire continues. Those negotiations are taking place in the Egyptian capital. We reached the CBC News correspondent Margaret Evans in Cairo.

Living Under Rockets: Israel & Gaza Conflict - Al Jazeera Reporter

We started this segment with a clip from Al Jazeera Reporter Nicole Johnston reporting from Gaza City on Monday.

Amjad Shawa has felt the powerful trembling caused by those explosions. He's the Gaza Coordinator for the Palestinian NGO Network, an umbrella organization of Palestinian groups doing humanitarian, development and human rights work in the Palestinian territories. He lives in Gaza City.

Living Under Rockets: Israel & Gaza Conflict - Periodic Missile Stress Disorder

Faye Bittker says she's suffering with Periodic Missile Stress Disorder. She works in Beersheva, a city in southern Israel and a frequent target of rocket fire from Gaza. She's written a number of articles about the recent chaos. And we reached her in her office at Ben Gurion University of Negev where classes are canceled today.

This segment was produced by The Current's Gord Westmacott and Sujata Berry.
