Part Two of The Current
The Tale of Two Nazanins: Nazanin Afshin-Jam
2003 was a big year for Nazanin Afshin-Jam. She went on to win runner up in the Miss World competition. It was also the year her world of youth and beauty collided with a world of ugliness and death. She learned of another girl named Nazanin -- a seventeen year old Iranian sentenced to hang for stabbing a man who tried to rape her.
Nazanin in Canada fought -- successfully -- to save Nazanin in Iran. It was a struggle that inspired her wider efforts to rescue minors on death row . She founded an organization called Stop Child Executions. And she's just co-authored a book with Susan McClelland about the experience. It's called The Tale of Two Nazanins: A Teenager on Death Row in Iran and the Canadian Who Vowed to Save Her. Nazanin Afshin-Jam was in our Toronto studio.
The book goes on sale Tuesday May 22nd.
