Laws and Mores: The legal battles of Dr. Morgentaler

Listen

It was a fight in Quebec that polarized Canadians when Dr. Henry Morgentaler stood trial for performing an abortion. As MPs confront a private members bill on defining when a fetus becomes a person, we go back to the court fights of the 70s and the role Henry Morgentaler played in influencing the practices around abortion that continue to create debate today.

Part Two of The Current

Laws and Mores: The legal battles of Dr. Morgentaler

Members of Parliament could vote on a controversial private member's bill as early as next month... a motion to re-examine the issue of when a fetus becomes a person. Many accuse Tory backbencher Stephen Woodworth of trying to re-open the debate on abortion. Few though expect the bill to survive.

This country has been without an abortion law since 1988 when the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the law after an aggressive legal battle by Dr. Henry Morgentaler.

Today, as part of our Game Changer series... we're looking at Dr. Morgentaler, who is now 89 years old. Whether you believe he changed the game for the better or not... he did change the game.

The documentary Laws and Mores: the legal battles of Dr. Morgentaler was produced by Piya Chattopadhyay.
