Oil Sands vs. Coal

Crunch the numbers and it is neither Conventional Crude nor Unconventional Oil Sands fuel that will send global temperatures rising highest .. fastest. That distinction belongs to coal and even Natural Gas. This latest information comes form one of Canada's most renowned Climate scientists, Andrew Weaver. So .. what's he telling us?

Part One of The Current

It's Tuesday, February 21st.

After telling critics of his internet surveillance bill that they stand with pedophiles, Public Safety minister Vic Toews now admits he personally opposes some of the bills provisions.

Currently, Minister Toews says he will have nothing further to say until he actually understands what's in his bill.

This is The Current.

Oil Sands vs. Coal

Andrew Weaver has often found himself drawn into heated global debates over climate change. And now, the world renowned scientist is feeling the heat again. In a new commentary published in the journal Nature he writes that the Alberta oilsands are not the main contributor to global warming. He believes coal is.

Coming from an expert who has been a lead author of two reports from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and arriving on the eve of a key European Union vote over whether to label oil sands crude as more harmful than other fuels ... it's no wonder these findings are grabbing attention.

Andrew Weaver is a Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria, and the Canada Research Chair in Climate Modelling and Analysis. He was in Victoria.
