For her, the definition has always been rather basic ... a person who believes in the full social, economic and political equality of men and women and acts on it ... That is a Feminist. And she is a feminist Icon, a myth-breaker and Game Changer . Today, Gloria Steinem talks about the past that got her here and the future that keeps her going.

It's Wednesday, September 28th.

The Conservative government is severely restricting the amount of debate on its omnibus crime bill.

In other words, a minimum of sentences on minimum sentences.

This is the Current.

Game Changer: Gloria Steinem

Before Gloria Steinem bought her first typewriter, some women probably wondered why they had to choose between a career and marriage. Some likely wondered why television shows were full of deferential housewives and why soap advertisements featured girls in bikinis. Some men likely wondered why they had greater legal rights in marriage. Some questioned why they had so few female work colleagues, and why the women weren't paid as much as the men.

But with her articles and books, Ms. Steinem forced those thoughts into the minds of an entire generation. Contraception, abortion, gay rights became proper topics for public discussion. She once wrote that "The plain truth is that nothing changes without change-makers."

And today, as part of The Current's Game Changer project, Gloria Steinem, a feminist, author and activist, joined us in our Toronto studio to talk about her historic contributions to change and what changes may come.
