Part Two of The Current
Michigan Governor - Jennifer Granholm
We started this segment tape from U.S. President Barack Obama in June, 2009. The world's economy was imploding and here was the President of the United States explaining that General Motors, -- mighty General Motors -- was declaring bankruptcy.
Still, it was a canny financial move allowing for restructuring that that would save the U.S. car industry. It was the culmination of months of nerve-wracking negotiations, including a controversial bailout. It's hard to imagine a wheel turning in the United States without the mighty industrial capacity of Michigan.
And no person knew the stakes better than its Canadian-born Governor Jennifer Granholm. Those dramatic days are recounted by the former Governor in her new book A Governor's Story: The Fight for Jobs and America's Economic Future. Jennifer Granholm joined us from New York this morning.
