This is The Current.
Oprah Winfrey's Impact - Cheryl Hallett
Hard to believe that 25 years ago, The Oprah Winfrey Show first aired. Since then, Oprah Winfrey has become one of the most influential women in the world. If you make one of her favourite things, you're an instant millionaire. If she liked reading it - expect it to shoot to the top of the bestseller list.
And if your cause is one she believes in - get ready for the spotlight. Because let's face it - in this world, what Oprah says, goes. She owes that influence, of course, in large part to The Oprah Winfrey Show. After 25 years, that show officially comes to an end today. But its legacy will undoubtedly live on .... something Oprah once discussed with a friend.
Cheryl Hallett is among those who say their lives were changed by Oprah. She appeared on an Oprah makeover show in 2000, and discovered that there was more to the makeover than a new look. Cheryl Hallett joined us from her home in Wellington, Florida.
Oprah Winfrey's Impact - Panel
There are, of course, legions of other Oprah fans like Cheryl Hallett. And as a group, they're pretty devoted ... so devoted, in fact, that The Onion - a satirical website and newspaper - couldn't resist. In 1998, it published this article - entitled Oprah Viewers Patiently Awaiting Instructions.
Jennifer Harris has thought a lot about the impact Oprah has had on culture and society -- and the extent to which her viewers have become blind followers. She edited a book of essays called: The Oprah Phenomenon. And she's a professor in English and American Studies at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. And Jennifer Simon is a freelance writer in Brooklyn, New York. Last year, she wrote a well circulated article on Nerve.com entitled 10 Good Reasons You Should Hate Oprah Winfrey.
