Teen Suicide - Pam Murchison

Jenna Bowers-Bryanton was 15 when she recorded herself singing and posted it on YouTube. She was a high school student in Truro, Nova Scotia. Jenna suffered from depression. And school was not easy for her. She'd left school during her first semester of grade ten.

In January -- right before she was set to go back -- Jenna committed suicide. Pam Murchison is Jenna's mother. She thinks there are important lessons to be drawn from her daughter's death. She joined us from Halifax.

Teen Suicide - Diane Sacks

Diane Sacks has treated many teens who have struggled with mental health issues. Jenna belonged to that dangerous demographic, the Canadian Mental Health Association notes suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 14. We've talked a lot about on mental issues on this program since January especially and we wanted to bring Diane Sacks in to talk about this. She has been a paediatrician in Toronto for the last 40 years. She's also the Chair of the Canadian Paediatric Society's Mental Health Section. And she has treated many teens who have struggled with mental illness. She was in Toronto.
