Hockey Concussions: Last Friday, we aired a special edition of The Current hosted by former NHL all star Theo Fleury. And one issue Theo tackled was the epidemic of concussions in hockey -- from the pros right down to the kids.
Brad Madigan is 19 years old. He played goal for a Midget Double A team before a series of concussions forced him out of the game. He rationalized the symptoms for a while before seeing a specialist ... who immediately pulled him out of all activities. Brad described that period of time to Theo. His story resonated with one of our listeners in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and we shared her letter.
Naheed Nenshi: Fewer Canadian kids are playing hockey ... particularly boys ... and they are dropping out of hockey at a younger age. Calgary's new mayor, Naheed Nenshi spoke with Theo Fleury about how cities need to rethink their approach to hockey. After this segment we heard from listeners with their added thoughts to this discussion.
Theo Fleury: Male Sexual Abuse Panel
We prepared three parts to last week's program. But then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned and we had to do some juggling. So we brought Theo back to talk about the work he is doing helping men who have been sexually abused. Theo Fleury, a sexual abuse survivor was joined by two guests. Rick Goodwin is the Executive Director of The Men's Project. And Lee Ferrill, a sexual abuse survivor.
