Iran Uprising: Journalists Panel
We started this segment with a scene in the Iranian legislature ... as law-makers chanted for the execution of Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi. They are two of Iran's most prominent opposition leaders. And they were put under house arrest, to prevent them from joining anti-government protests in Tehran. Iranians took to the streets after their government expressed support for the uprisings that toppled the governments in Egypt and Tunisia.
Of course people demanding change have taken to the streets in various Iranian cities for the last 2 years. But the Iranian government has been less keen on the idea of a revolution in Iran. Security forces are reported to have killed two demonstrators. There continue to be severe restrictions on journalists trying to cover the events in Iran ... making it difficult to know exactly what is happening.
That's where our next three guests come in. They all live outside Iran. But they are following the events there closely and reporting on them from outside the country. Bahman Kalbasi is a reporter for the BBC's Persian service. He was in New York City. Genieve Abdo is the Director of the Iran program at 2 Washington think-tanks including The Century Foundation. She has worked as a reporter in Iran. She was in Washington. And Kelly Golnoush Niknejad is the Editor-in-Chief of Tehran Bureau, which works with Frontline PBS. She was in Boston.
