Back to the Land - A Documentary by Stephen Puddicombe
For five years, the Democratic Republic of Congo was torn apart by a brutal civil war. Five million people were killed as the government, rebel groups and six foreign armies vied for control of the country's lucrative mineral deposits. The conflict was frequently blamed on ethnic strife. But many say that land use is what's really at the core of the problems.
The DRC has had a peace deal in place since 2003. But it is a tenuous peace aned now, tens of thousands of Congolese refugees are preparing to come back to the DRC. And many people fear that will further inflame the tensions over land and perhaps ignite an all-out war.
The CBC's Stephen Puddicombe recently spent some time in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His documentary is called Back to The Land.
