PART TWO
It's time now for our weekly look at the mail. And Alison Smith joined Anna Maria this in studio. Alison is, of course, the host of the World at Six on CBC Radio. She's also a senior correspondent for CBC News. And she'll be our Friday host for the next couple of weeks.
Autism: Earlier this month we broadcasted an interview with Seth Mnookin. He's the author of The Panic Virus, a book about the work of Doctor Andrew Wakefield. Doctor Wakefield is alternately credited and blamed for questioning the safety of the measles mumps and rubella vaccine and for suggesting that it might be linked to autism. Earlier this month the British Medical Journal published a series of articles that said Doctor Wakefield's research on autism and the MMR vaccine was fraudulent. After that interview aired we received a lot of e-mails and phone messages from listeners who demanded that we ask for Doctor Wakefield's side of the story. Many of you wrote in strong opinions about the piece.
Dental Tourism Los Algodones is a small town in Mexico just across the border from Arizona. And it has the distinction of having more dentists per capita than anywhere else in the world. That's because Los Algodones has become a popular destination for Americans and Canadians who want to get their dental work done affordably. We received a significant amounf of mail regarding this item.
Filial ResponsibilityLast week we told you about rarely used laws that allow elderly parents to sue their adult children for support. Filial responsibility legislation is on the books in every province except Alberta. We heard from Donna Anderson. Ms. Anderson's mother is suing her and three of her brothers for support. We tried to include Donna's mother Shirley Anderson in our original story. But she was unavailable. We have since received an email from a listener who identified herself as Shirley Anderson.
