Dr. Abuelaish Lawsuit

Palestinian Doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish is suing the Israeli government for the death of three of his daughters. He thinks justice for his daughters will provide a good model for the Israeli-Palestinian relationship and feels forgiveness is not something that can be given unilaterally.

PART ONE

It's Wednesday, December 29th.

After decades of secrecy, the federal government says it will release some of the information the RCMP and CSIS gathered about Tommy Douglas.

Currently, Spoiler alert ... He was a socialist.

This is The Current.

Abuelaish Lawsuit

Nearly two years ago, Doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish endured a catastrophe that would forever change his life. The horrific event was broadcast live on Israeli T.V. It was January 2009. Izzeldin Abuelaish was living in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza.

For three weeks, the Israeli government had been bombarding the territory in an operation said to root out militants who were launching rockets into Israel. But on that January 16th, it was Dr. Abuelaish's family home that came under attack. Israeli tank shells came down on the house. Three of his daughters died on the spot.

Since then, Izzeldin Abuelaish has been preaching peace and reconciliation. He moved to Toronto and published a book called I Shall Not Hate. And earlier this year, on The Current, he vowed never to seek revenge.

And yet, this past weekend, he filed a lawsuit against the Israeli government in search of compensation for his daughters' deaths. Izzeldin Abuelaish was in Toronto this morning to help us draw the lines between justice, forgiveness and peace. He now works as an associate professor of health at the University of Toronto.
