We're off to Wolfe Island, near Kingston, Ontario where a community is struggling with the costs and benefits of embracing wind power. Listen to Kristin Nelson's documentary, Beauty and the Beast.
PART TWO
Beauty and the Beast - Kristin Nelson
The idea of tapping the wind to produce energy doesn't seem like it should be rife with controversy. After all, once the turbines are set up, they provide power with no pollution ... essentially for free. But across Canada, wind energy projects are becoming increasingly divisive. Many politicians, environmentalists and entrepreneurs see them as a sign of progress and a thing of beauty.
But others see wind turbines as a blight on the horizon ... as well as a nuisance and a threat to property values. And the debate over wind power is often much more complicated than a simple pro and con. That's because the communities touched by these turbines are as diverse and changing as the wind itself.
The Current's Kristin Nelson has the story of one community where wind power has taken hold. Her documentary is called Beauty and The Beast.
